The Urban Series - 5 photographs, 5 paintings, 5 textile pieces

I think we all have ‘place(s)’ that touch us viscerally. A ‘place’ that spontaneously makes us inhale, relax our shoulders and confidently exhale. Or a ‘place’ that upon arriving quickens our breath and makes us want to delve deeper. Or maybe it’s a ‘place’ where we breathe more slowly, more completely and are nourished.

This series, Urban Edges, explores urban ‘place’. The urban that is ever changing and raw and vibrant and diverse and exciting and sad and magical and has corners and alleys you just want to explore all day long.

Both the acrylic and the textile pieces focus on urban vignettes. They explore the nuances, the tiny intense qualities, the hints of lives lived and the lasting influences of urbanity. Each piece has its inspiration from a photograph taken in an urban center but they are contemporary abstracts and influenced by both textile and graphic design. The focus is on lines, intersections, building blocks and layers. The palette of greys, blacks and rusts reflect the west coast of British Columbia. And finally, the pieces give form to a ‘place’ important to me.

“I should never have imagined a city like this could exist.” Italo Calvino
